I've been using Maxxis IT Desert rear tires on my XR400 for about 5 years and they perform very well in the rocky deserts of Utah where I ride. The XR400 is really heavy, and sidewall of the Maxxis IT tires is stiff enough to keep the tube from getting pinched while running at speed, but not so stiff that the knobs won't turn in to face the surface while leaned way over in turns (running 13 psi). I laced up a 19' rear on my XR, so there is even less sidewall to work with. On heavy bikes like the XR400, these rear tires track straight under acceleration, and drift predictably under power while turning. Knob life is acceptable, one rear will usually last me a full 10 day trip, which is usually between 800-1000 miles. They work pretty well on blow sand when they are fresh, and great on loose dirt and hard pack all the time. Of course, anything will stick to sand rock. They wear pretty fast on the highway though, but comparable to the Dunlops and Brigestones I've used in the past. Pair the rear with a Maxxis IT front and the XR, which is already a very well mannered trail-bike, will handle great. I gave five stars based on the off-road surfaces the tire is designed for. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Maxxis M7305D Maxxcross Desert IT Tire - Rear - 110/90-19, Tire Application: Hard, Tire Construction: Bias, Position: Rear, Load Rating: 62, Speed Rating: M, Tire Size: 110/90-19, Rim Size: 19, Tire Type: Offroad TM78728000" are high quality item.
