Pros: The adapter assembly fit perfectly according to instructions. Comes with a wiring harness long enough to get you where you need it to.Cons: The adapter required some minor tweaking to operate the lock assembly. All of the wiring's connectors were useless and discarded. Not enough zip ties to get you where you need to go. The instructions lacked directions at where to take the wiring harness once the wire left the tailgate. Its a gear driven actuator instead of a solenoid actuator.
The adapter assembly required some minor metal bending to make the two operating tabs (these are the two tabs that make contact with your truck and push the latch to the lock or unlock position,) that contact the metal lock latch, while not interfering with the plastic tab attached to the metal lock latch. By bending the two operating tabs downward (only slightly past 90 degrees,) the two tabs will not catch on the plastic tab on the metal lock latch, which may bind.
The wiring connectors (spade connectors, bullet connectors and two-wire plug) were inadequate. The bullet connectors would not push together and stay, as there was no grip in them and should not have been used for this anyways. The two-wire plug would not go together and seal properly nor was it weather proof; it was some cheap thing that was not made right. The spade connectors connectors were put on the end of the wire harness and im not sure why because the kit comes with inline splice connectors to attach to the trucks wiring. I purchased fully insulated spade connectors my auto parts store, for my connections inside the tailgate. I purchased a fully sealed weather proof two-wire plug to replace the faulty one on the wiring harness. I also used heat shrink for the wiring that come directly out of the actuator. It will rub against the adapter assembly where it has very sharp edges and may cut the insulation and short.
The instructions really didnt tell you where to go after wiring harness leaves the tailgate. I noticed that the wiring harness may get pinched by the tailgate when its lowered so I drilled a hole in the plastic harness holder for the backup camera that leads to the backup camera connector, and fed the wire through that. I also used a rubber grommet to protect the wiring harness as it exits the tailgate through the drain hole. I put my two-wire connector next to the backup camera connector up under the bumper. I then ran the wiring harness along the passenger side attaching to the wiring harness already there, with zip ties. There is a spot where the exhaust gets close to the trucks wiring harness and Toyota used some metal insulating tape to cover their plastic harness from heat. I had some metal tape so I used it to cover my wiring in that area, to keep it from melting. The instructions call for taking the wiring to the firewall but there is a rubber grommet that is under the front passenger area that I used instead; it is much closer and still very well protected by the frame. I drilled a small hole in the rubber grommet and ran the wiring harness through there. At the truck's wire junction, the instructions tell you to splice into the two colored wires but there are also those same colors in different sizes, so use the medium sized wire where the two colors match.
The actuator is gear driven instead of a solenoid, which makes a gear noise from the tailgate and is kind of loud. Being gear driven means there are more moving parts to it and the actuator may fail faster than the rest of the solenoid door locks already on the truck. I guess only time will tell.
Conclusion: After all that I have said, for $80+ and 4-6 hours of my time, its a decent buy. They definitely could have made this a way better product but I have not found another for my year of truck.
