Installed in a 2000 Saab 93 convertible:

Installation was straight-forward if you're handy with this type of thing. Get yourself an installation kit (harness, etc...), and a fill pocket if your car as a 2 DIN slot. Take your time ... solder and shrink-tube your splices. The 'quick-start' guide has a wiring diagram.

User Interface:
Admittedly a little complicated when you first start using the radio. However, all the basic functionality is pretty easily accessible from the main knob and surrounding buttons. You will need to read the manual (not just he quick-start guide)! Download the manual here:[...] EDIT: I had included a link to the manual PDF, but apparently Amazon strips those out. Just google for "KDC-X595 manual" ... it'll probably be the first hit.

Advanced settings require a "long press" on the central knob. Here you can change the factory defaults for a lot of the settings. I really like the ability to change the colors of the buttons, screen, and input ports individually to match your car's interior ... your your own whims. "Out of the box", the radio just cycles through the colors ... this is annoying and gaudy ... but some people like that I guess. Change it (or not) as your whims drive you.

Visibility:
At night, the display is very nice. A little tweaking of the preferences and it should blend right in with almost any modern car's interior.
During the day, all the colors get washed out, and you'll get black text on a blue-ish background. It's generally legible, but not as nice as at night. Direct sunlight will generally render the display unreadable.

Sound:
Really good, and highly customizable. There are many ways to tweak the sound to tailor it to your vehicle, personal preference and music choices. In addition to the manual EQ settings, there are also a number of 'common' presets available.

Use with iPod:
The factory default setting is that if you connect your iPod via the USB port, the head unit "takes over control" of the device. You cannot control the music through the iPod itself. The radio instead offers you an interface to browse and select your music. In this mode, you connect your i-device and tuck it away and forget it's there. If you are the type of person who has a small-ish library, or tends to use a lot of playlists, you may find Kenwood's interface sufficient. Do keep in mind that it doesn't seem to access the "Genius" playlists.

However, there is a setting where you can leave the iPod in control. In this mode, you can still take advantage of the DAC override (better sound), and USB charging, but still use the iPod/Pad/Phone's superior interface. I use this setting myself, as I also use my iPod as my GPS (tomtom app), and I don't like the interface for browsing the music library provided by the head unit.

You could also connect your iPod through the Aux input (via the iPod's headphone jack). This is dead-simple, but you get no charging and you're using the iPod's (inferior) DAC and also now have your volume controlled in two places (on the radio and on the iPod). Really, the AUX input is only there for other audio devices that don't have the ability to stream files via USB.

Use with a thumb drive/data CD:
I haven't used this functionality. However, it does appear that you've got all the tools you need to access and play a decently sized music library. Including playlists, which are PROBABLY your best bet when on the road.

I've knocked off a star from my rating due to the poor bright-light visibility and slightly complicated user-interface.
