Motion Pro PBR Chain Breaker Press and Riveting Tool (for hollow and soft nose master link pin) Review

I'm a former dealership tech, and have been wrenching on customers' as well as my own bikes in service or independently, since the '90s. My first tool to swap chains was an MP Mini Chain Breaker...still have it and used it, 15 years later... that is, until this tool.

I was stoked. The Mini was fine for breaking, but as a junior tech I had to use the Vise-Grip/nut method to press the plate and new rivet master on (I do not use clip masters and refuse to install them without a signed waiver -- quite dangerous throwback, that). Now I didn't have to buy the MP breaker/riveter kit in the plastic box, at its considerable cost. Plus, that old setup wasn't known for its build quality -- many fellow techs who were not shadetrees broke them regularly, even with lubing and diligence.

So when this came out, I was intrigued -- now here's a tool that can do my range of chains and then some, with less parts and with improved design. The box kit breaker/press/riveter was bulky, heavy, and awkward to use when it worked, and this seemed to address some of those failings. I bit and pulled the trigger, as my SV needed a new chain/sprockets badly...

It's not as heavy as the old tool, and the handle is placed closer to the threaded ram side, so you can squeeze the wrench and the handle together to tighen or loosen -- a huge plus, and worth the swap to this tool by itself vs. the old design. But as long as you follow the instructions on how to position the little multi-function 'dice' on the tool, the job becomes much less hassle with fewer small parts that risk damage and failure.

Pros: Lighter. Simpler. Multi-function 'dice' design is smarter, more durable and more idiot-resistant. Leverage much easier on the hands with new handle position. Cheaper than the old breaker/press/riveter kit, which they still sell.

Cons: Still not as easy to use as it could be. 'Dice' is held in place with friction, so occasionally it falls out -- just use a dab of grease. Chinese-built, with a finish that seems both fragile and abrasive, not something you want to see on threaded parts (caveat: with a dose of good quality engine oil or chain lube, threaded parts have worked smoothly so far. But the black finish is inferior to the same parts on my Mini from 1998). Riveter ram is a bit big for a 525 rivet master (it split one rivet, on a chain that's not easy to do that on -- the Mini used to be sold with a riveting ram that was smaller than this PBR version. Didn't ruin the chain, however).

Conclusion: Given the choice, this PBR tool is a no-brainer -- get it. Unless you regularly do camchains or FZR400R drive chains or other gray-market sportbikes, this is all the chain swap tool you need to service a modern sportbike. ;)
